Intent:
The intent of this website is to assist those seeking information on the great walks and the beautiful views located here in Northeast Tennessee. For those from afar looking to experience the Southern Appalachians, Northeast Tennessee has miles upon verdant miles of hiking trails.
Sometimes the nearby trail is the renown Appalachian Trail (AT). About 175 miles of the AT journeys through the area described by this site. Some regional highlights along the AT include Laurel Falls and the views from the hilltops and ridge-lines of Roan Mountain, Big Bald, Beauty Spot, and Firescald Ridge. The different sections of the site are: The Walks, Nearby Tennessee State Parks, Information for the Visiting Ramblers, and a Timeline of Notable Occurrences. The Walks covers day-hikes I am familiar with throughout Northeast Tennessee. Beneath the map of Northeast Tennessee are photos. These photos link to further details about the area, particularly about hikes and directions to starting points for those hikes. The additional resources page lists online references/resources and hard copy resources in case you are interested, or if this site didn't provide the intel you were looking for. There are some excellent blogs with superior expertise on this region including Appalachian Treks, RATtreks and Hiking Bill. The information they provide is almost enough to avoid purchasing a good guide book or maps. For me personally, I highly recommend Highland Trails by Kenneth Murray. I think it is the best guide book for the area. I also want to put in a good word for Pat Alderman's Overmountain Men, some might say East Tennessee's answer to Edith Hamilton's Mythology. |
